Opening Night Celebration:

On February 4th, 2010, the Opening Night Celebration of HBR FEST will feature a start-studded red carpet with celebrities from Hollywood, Brazil and elsewhere in Latin-America. An award ceremony will precede the world premiere presentation of National Security (Segurança Nacional), followed by a hosted bar after-party.

National Security (Segurança Nacional) is a Hollywood-style action thriller film. Starring Thiago Lacerda, and supported by a stellar cast, the film shows a nation in action against drug trafficking, and boasts real Army and Air Force footage. With the new Intercept and Destroy Law, in which fighter planes can intercept clandestine aircraft over national territory, cartels all over Latin America have seen their business threatened. As this measure aims to fight drug trafficking, the cartels join forces to try to defeat the Brazilian Government. Despite threats and pressure, the President discards the option of revoking the Law. Enraged, Hector Gasca (Joaquin Cosio), the head of the largest drug cartel, decides to place an entire nation at risk. It is a movie that will change the Brazilian people’s way of thinking.

Retrospective Film Presentation:

HBR FEST will screen the classic 1962 film Keeper of Promises (O Pagador de Promessas), the only Brazilian film to win the Palm D’Or at Cannes and the first ever to be nominated for the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Film. The film, directed by Anselmo Duarte, tells the story of Zé – a very poor man from the Brazilian countryside. His most prized possession is his donkey. When his donkey falls terminally ill, Zé makes a promise to Saint Bárbara: If his donkey recovers, he will carry a cross – like Jesus – all the way from his city to Saint Bárbara’s church in the state capital. Upon the recovery of his donkey, Zé leaves on his journey. He makes it to the church, but the priest refuses to accept the cross once he came to know the context of Zé’s promise.

LGBT Program:

Includes the Los Angeles Premiere of Paulista (Quanto Dura o Amor?) Directed by Roberto Moreira and featuring the breakthrough performance of transsexual actress Maria Clara Spinelli. The movie portrays how at the fast pace of the city, the characters live the euphoria of passion and its flipside, taking the audience along on a journey full of surprises. HBR FEST will also showcase the World Premiere of Elvis & Madona, a romantic comedy about the love story between young lesbian Elvis and Madona, a transvestite.
